The best curl creams to buy in 2021

Rating 4.7 sterren, op basis van 860 opmerkingen

If your curly or wavy hair is in a natural style, you may need something to help define the curls and hold them in place. Gel and mousse may play a role in defining the shape, but tend to produce a fairly crisp effect; for a clear structure that still allows natural bounce and movement, curling cream (or cream) is a good choice.

Curling creams that are lighter than wax, thicker than serum, and softer than gel often contain moisturizing ingredients to help encourage frizz and tame frizz, while holding the hair softly in place.

Curling creams can be used on wet hair and then blow-dried, blow-dried or air-dried; they can also be added in small amounts to dry hair to add styling and shine to your finished styling. Read on for our guide on choosing the best curling cream for you, as well as our favorite curling creams for all hair types and budgets.

What is a curling cream?

In short, curling cream is made by suspending a certain type of oil in water to create a soft lotion that adds moisture and shine to the hair. By moisturizing the hair, the curling cream gently defines the small ring pattern of all curling hair types. This cream also has a creamy texture to smooth the cuticles, so curling creams are an excellent choice for frizzy hair. The curling cream can be used to smooth and define any curls, from type 2 waves to type 4 curls.

What ingredients does my curling cream contain?

All curling creams are based on a combination of some oils to moisturize and nourish the hair. Coconut oil, argan oil, and shea butter are all popular choices, as are moisturizers such as aloe vera gel. Ingredients such as wheat protein, keratin or silk protein can increase hair strength and help shape and define curls. Curly hair tends to prefer products that do not contain sulfates. Sulfates will dehydrate the hair further, leading to dry hair.

Depending on the size of your hair and the type of frizz, you may prefer a thick cream with heavier oils to penetrate and moisturize thick curls, or use a lighter cream for fine hair or loose waves. We have included all hair texture options in the selection below.

How to use curling cream

After washing with your favorite combination of shampoo and conditioner, wrap your hair with a low-friction towel or T-shirt and let it get wet. Take a ball of marble-sized curling cream in one hand and rub your palms together.

Spread the cream evenly on the hair from just below the roots of the hair to the ends of the hair, spread it out like a conditioner. If you have very long or thick hair, dividing your hair into four parts will help you evenly distribute the product. Massage the cream onto your tresses, then use your hands to smooth the hair from root to tip to seal the cuticle. Let the hair dry naturally, or gently blow dry with a diffuser in a cool environment.

Once the hair is dry, you may need to take a small amount from the ends to increase the moisture and shine of the dry ends and to seal any flying ends. Now proudly put on your bouncy curls.
